In practical homeowner terms, a 200-amp service can accommodate more simultaneous electrical demand than a 100-amp service when the rest of the service equipment and utility connection are designed for that rating.

Heating and cooling equipment, water heating, cooking, laundry, pool equipment, lighting, receptacles, and other fixed loads all affect the calculation.
EV charging, heat pumps, induction cooking, electric dryers, hot tubs, workshops, additions, and accessory spaces can change the demand profile.

A significant remodel can add circuits, square footage, appliances, and mechanical loads. It is often better to evaluate service capacity as part of the overall electrical plan.
Age, condition, panel design, available spaces, service configuration, or other deficiencies can affect whether keeping the existing equipment is practical.
A 200-amp upgrade should be tied to the actual project needs—not presented as a universal requirement for every older house.
Physical breaker space and electrical capacity are different questions. A panel can have unused spaces while the calculated service demand is already near its practical limit. The opposite can also happen: a panel may be crowded even when the service still has capacity.
If the issue is only physical space, a properly designed subpanel may sometimes be part of the solution. If the issue is service capacity, simply adding spaces does not solve the underlying load problem.

Modern electrification projects can add several substantial loads over a short period of time. That makes long-term planning more valuable than evaluating each circuit in isolation.

Program terms can change, so verify current eligibility directly with SMUD before making a project decision based on incentives.
No. Depending on the home and proposed loads, an electrician may evaluate alternatives before recommending a complete service upgrade.
An EV charger may not need to operate at its maximum possible current if the homeowner’s daily driving needs can be met at a lower setting.
Listed energy-management or load-control equipment can sometimes help integrate new loads within an existing service. The specific product and design must be evaluated for the property.
A subpanel can provide additional circuit spaces when capacity exists but the existing panel is physically full. It does not increase the electrical service rating.

An electrical service or panel upgrade can involve both the local building authority and the utility, but they have different roles. The City of Sacramento, Sacramento County, or another local jurisdiction handles the applicable building permit and inspection process for the property. SMUD handles utility-side meter and service coordination for projects in its service territory when utility work is required.
SMUD’s current Meter and Service process tells customers to start with the appropriate local agency, submit the project to SMUD when utility coordination is needed, obtain local inspection approval, and then have SMUD complete the meter/service work after that approval is received.
